weekend to remember...for a lifetime

While this post is a few months late, I have struggled finding the right words to describe this weekend. I still don't have them, but as the year 2012 comes to an end, I want to highlight a weekend that occurred that we will always cherish. While we can look at the year and wish it never happened, we also have much to be thankful for, especially the beautiful nine months in 2012 that were so good to our Mitch. He ended 2011 with a beautiful toast at our family Christmas & rang in the new year happy & healthy. We have so many wonderful memories that we feel so blessed to keep our hearts warm during our dark days. It wouldn't be right to wish the year away, it was a bittersweet year.
With that, I want to share our weekend, the weekend of September 8th...
Luke and Ben were lucky enough to celebrate their birthdays a week later when Uncle Nate, Uncle Bryan, and Aunt Kate were in town to celebrate a family weekend, September 8th. This was our last family weekend together, one that we will always remember and cherish forever.
Uncle Nate flew in from Seattle on Wednesday evening, September 5th. Mitch picked him up from the airport, we grilled burgers, had a few beers, and caught up! The next day the boys opened up gifts from Uncle Nate and Aunt Debbie!
Friday night, Bryan and Kate met us downtown Iowa City. We had gotten a babysitter for the two boys and headed out for some pizza at the Airliner. We squeezed into a booth, enjoyed some pizza, beer, and sharing laughs as always! After dinner headed to Joe's place for a few beers and that is where Bryan and Kate met us. Saturday was game day, tailgating fun, watching the game at our house, grill out, and our first family bonfire! We made smores, told stories, and enjoyed being together. Sunday morning we made a big breakfast, the boys opened their birthday gifts from Uncle Bryan & Aunt Kate.
We all headed down to the Vine to watch the opening weekend of NFL football and had some lunch. I headed home to put the boys down for a nap, and just after I left, the TV's went out at the Vine, so they all headed to Bandana's.  Bryan & Kate took off after the Dolphins game, and the rest of the guys, Dad, Sean, Nate, & Mitch all headed out for 9 holes of golf. Ironically, Mitch does not like to golf, but he would always go just to be with family. Sean and Mitch had a great time 'horsing around' as Sean put it, and really just enjoyed the evening on the golf course. Mitch teed off on #9 (with my golf clubs) and broke my driver on his very last golf shot! We will cherish that golf club forever and ever. I made up some maid rites for the guys to eat after golf before we all said our final good-bye. If only I would have known...there is so much I would've said and so much I would have done. I never got a chance to tell Mitch just how proud I was of him. The Friday afternoon before, my mom & I went and had pedicures and she filled me in on dad and Mitch's farming plans. I was so happy for him and proud of him for working so hard at jobs he never truly enjoyed, just waiting for the chance to farm with my dad. The time had come and I was so proud of him. I never got a chance to tell him while he was present on this earth,  I tell him daily now... but it's just not the same. I would have loved to have seen his reaction hearing those words from me. Mitch spent sometime with Luke and Ben before he left, gave us all his big hugs, exchanged I love you, and waved good bye...that was our last weekend together. One we will cherish forever and ever....

"I was here"

Shortly after my brother passed away, someone posted this video on my facebook page stating this song reminded her of Mitch. I have found myself listening to this song and yes, it does in fact fit Mitch perfectly. Missing him so dearly and deeply....

This was taken after Mitch toasted to Sean and I on our wedding. He gave me a hard time for writing papers for Bryan in college and not him...then on serious note, thanked me and shared I wasn't like a second mom, I was his second mom growing up.

Our days

Luke & I visited the John Deere store last week, we were in search of a new hat because his other one was getting too small and it was accidentally left at the farm. Luke could not drive his tractor and feed his cows without his JD hat, so we took a little trip to the store to get a new one. Luke could've stayed their for hours, maybe days. Santa had a long list when we left...
This is what our living room looks like most evenings while I prepare dinner...
Last week the stomach flu went through our whole house so lots of pedialyte, 7-up, and movies...
The boys received a nice gift from our good friends, and are excited to fill it with yummy treats for Santa and his elves next week!
 having a sick day...
The tent is back...
Ben decided to celebrate his 15th month birthday a few weeks ago by persistently crawling out of his crib. I didn't want to mess with the tent so I dropped the mattress to the floor that night after a 45 minute debacle. Over the weekend this was one of our projects

Light may always shine...

This evening we participated in Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting in honor of Mitch and all children gone too soon. While this candle burned for one hour this evening, a light will always shine for Mitch in our hearts. His love will forever stay and keep him alive in our hearts. Love and Hugs to you in Heaven Mitch. Missing you so much

Precious Child
In my dreams you are alive and well
Precious Child
Precious Child
In my mind
I see you clear as a bell
Precious Child
Precious Child
In my soul
There is a hole...
That can never be filled:(
But in my heart
There is hope
Cause you are with
me still
In my heart
you live on
Always there
never gone
Precious Child
You left too soon
Though it may be true
That we're apart
you will live forever in my heart
In my plans
I was the first to leave
Precious Child
Precious Child
But in this world
I was left here to grieve
Precious Child
My precious child
In my soul
There is a hole...
That can never be filled:(
But in my heart
There is hope
And you are with me still
In my heart
you live on
always there
Never gone
Precious Child
You left too soon
Though it may be true
that we're apart
You will live forever in my heart
God knows I want to hold you...
see you...
touch you...
And someday I will see you again
Please know your not forgotten
Until then...
In my heart you on
Always there never gone
Precious Child
You left too soon
Though it may be true
That we're apart
You will live forever in my heart

Our Christmas Angel

Luke & Ben with their very special "Uncle Mitch" Christmas Angel
Love & miss you every second Mitch...life as we know it on this Earth just isn't the same.

"The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired and weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on the wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." -Isaiah 40:28-31

Our weekend

We headed up to my parents this weekend for Sean and my dad's annual deer hunt. The weather was crazy, warm and foggy, so it put a damper on a couple of their hunts. Luke and Ben had a great time running around the farm, Luke of course, farmed with Bop as much as he possibly could. He told me last night before he went to bed that he thinks he should move to the farm because he missed the cows so much. When I asked him, what about me, he said I could maybe come stay their sometimes! What a little ham!
 Sean and his prize
Ben loved the Buck, Luke was a little leary

Nannie had a little project for the boys, making hand print Christmas ornaments
 Bop snuggling with the boys

Luke had a special privilege of keeping his class pet "Hershey" for the week! He was so excited to give him a ride on his tractor and take him to the farm!
